For me, food has always been more about joy than health, so I was happy as I turned the pages of this hefty read to find much talk about the enrichment of the soul. Although the gentle, far-from-preachy voice of the author takes us through the many food paradigms of the diet world (finally!), acknowledging its myriad confusing contradictions, the term “nutrition book” would be a misnomer for this one. Its scope is much broader, linking the way we eat to as many avenues of life as you can think of. Everything about Soul-Full Eating is comforting, which makes it a good one to keep around rather than reading once and tossing.

Coconut Water: Better than Any Sports Drink

Question: What is the healthiest thing for my eight-year-old son to eat and drink before playing sports?

Maureen’s Answer:

Word hasn’t really hit the mainstream yet, but more and more people are discovering a truly wonderful source for the five essential electrolytes that help athletes perform at peak levels—not in manufactured sports drinks, but in coconut water! Tropical residents have known the benefits of drinking coconut water for a very long time. Because they work, play and live active lives in a hot, humid climate, they perspire often—and just as athletes, they must re-hydrate their bodies often to maintain optimum health.

Coconut water is a refreshing, tasty, and electrolyte-replacing beverage that—in my opinion—far surpasses every artificial sports drink. Coconut water contains no artificial sweeteners or added sugars. It’s not colored or artificially flavored and it’s fat and cholesterol free. But of most important concern to athletes, is that it’s an excellent source of the five essential electrolytes: potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and sodium—all delivered in nature’s perfect balance.

You can purchase whole Thai Baby Coconuts in oriental markets and in some natural foods stores, such as Whole Foods. These are not the little round brown coconuts—those are more mature and typically contain more coconut meat than water. Thai baby coconuts are found in the refrigerated sections of stores and they typically have the white husk still around the coconut shell.

These whole coconuts require some skill and tools to open, so although fresh, live coconuts are the best tasting, you can now purchase cartons (individual serving sized; or larger, 34 FL. Oz. sized cartons) that are convenient, easy to chill and drink from at any location—like sports fields! If you don’t have an oriental food store or natural food store nearby. Ask the grocers in your local supermarket to order some for you. Who knows, you may start a new trend for the folks in your neighborhood—and promote a winning (well-hydrated) team!

A Message About Done with Dieting from Maureen:
At first, my motivation to become supremely knowledgeable about nutrition and wellness was entirely self-serving and superficial. As an international model, I wanted to be “picture perfect” and “marketable,” so I could be successful and make a living. But as I watched friends and co-workers turn towards drugs or develop eating disorders, I realized that my interest in full-body wellness and spirituality had helped me not only maintain a desirable physique, but also stay sane in an often crazy and self-destructive industry.

Over the course of a quarter decade, I read literally hundreds of books, attended lectures, workshops and retreats by every known (and unknown) wellness authority of the day. As time passed and I thankfully matured, I realized that there is no “expert” and no one can be anyone else’s “diet authority.”

No matter how learned, how many degrees or titles someone may have after their name, the person who is most expert about you, is you!

In fact, the more I came to know myself, the more evident it became to me how ludicrous it is that any expert should be given the authority to tell me, or any one, what precisely I should eat, at any given time of the day!

I am not here to tell you that this food is good and this food is bad. It’s time to rise above all of that, and allow you to pay attention to your own body and your own needs, to give you the space to decide what is right for you, right now.

Despite a world littered with fast food restaurants and seductive junk food commercials promising ultimate satisfaction there are people who are able to stay thin and healthy and can negotiate their way through the synthetic food jungle every day. And even quite peacefully and consciously indulge from time to time. How?
They are focused on self-love, and have learned what satisfies their own needs, rather than endlessly filling a void and riding the cycle of self-guilt.
