Protecting Land in the U.S. – Big Farms are Losing Ground

Something To Be Aware Of…

Right now in the United States farmers are being rewarded by the government to plant fence-row to fence-row. In other words, some government subsidized farmers are leaving no grassy land between crops and water – which not only causes serious soil erosion, but renders water undrinkable and our oceans unfit to swim in. One striking example is The Dead Zone in the Gulf of Mexico.

This video from the Environmental Working Group stresses that it’s time the US government enforces the law that requires farmers to put conservation practices in place in exchange for the billions of dollars in tax payer income and insurance subsidies they get every year from tax payers.

As is stated in the video, “Farms need a safety net, but so does our land and water.”

I’m joining the fast – are you?

Hello Everyone!

I’m joining the fast – are you?

At the time of this writing more than 4000 people across the US have joined in solidarity in a hunger strike inspired by World Food Prize laureate David Beckmann, who presides over Bread for the World, to boycott the GOP’s devastating budget cuts to programs that assist the poor and the hungry while at the same time increasing defense spending. I believe the numbers joining in on this monumental event will be fast growing (no pun intended!) The fasting populace are particularly targeting cuts to food stamps, WIC and aid to the international poor and farmers. NY Times food columnist Mark Bittman (who’s joined in the movement) says, these supposedly deficit-reducing cuts will barely make a dent, Bittman writes, ‘they will quite literally cause more people to starve to death, go to bed hungry or live more miserably than are doing so now. And: The bill would increase defense spending.’

If you are one of the many bright Souls who are joining the fast or considering adding your name to the ranks to Protest GOP’s budget cuts to needy here is my thank you gift to you…

I have lots of experience with fasting. I’ve typically done extended fasts – for 10 days or more – at least twice a year. And I often fast at least one day a week. So I know the experience of fasting need not be debilitating and exhausting  but can actually be not only invigorating, cleansing, but centering and clarifying to the mind and opening to the heart – if done correctly.

A brief but comprehensive guide to fasting that I wrote in my book, Soul-Full Eating: A (Delicious!) Path to Higher Consciousness, my gift to you.

In solidarity,

A Sustainable message

Greening the Planet one plate of food at a time. Go Green!

The Dish on Soul-Full Eating

What happens when you cross a tree-hugger with a foodie and add a healthy helping of soul?

You’ve got what author Maureen Whitehouse describes as the new brand of Soul-Full consumer in her award-winning and best-selling book, Soul-Full Eating: A (Delicious!) Path to Higher Consciousness.

Soul-Full Eating is most surprising in its ability to flawlessly intertwine concepts that, until now, have not been considered in the same genre.

Whitehouse spreads the word about “going green” in a non-threatening way that all Americans can relate to—even those of us who are attached to our cold cuts and cars. Instead of scolding people into handing over the keys to their SUV, she advocates an easy-to-embrace and yummy path and shows the masses that helping the environment is well within their means. She reminds us that the same actions that are most fulfilling to us personally are also what best suits the planet. For example, the Soul-Full Eating motto: “Eat with love, what’s grown with love, prepared with love and served with love.” From a bright garden plot in the backyard to a fresh, home-cooked meal shared with family, Whitehouse shows us how paying attention to our food not only keeps us on track with our diet, but helps us to feel a healthier, more connected sense of comradery with the entire planet each and every time we sit down to “the entire world in our plate of food.”

Whitehouse doesn’t expect people to completely change their lifestyles overnight, but instead encourages them—and provides the tools—to become educated about where their food comes from and how it effects their well-being. She invites them to take whatever steps they can towards living a more authentically motivated life. Whitehouse reminds us that “going green” doesn’t have to be an us-against-them polarizing message, but one that is all-inclusive and that actually makes us feel better about our lives on a concrete level. Her message helps us to realize that via this practical path, filled with appreciation for the planet we live on, we can simultaneously gain a deeper love for our own lives and give up the “blame game” altogether.

If you’re interested in learning about what you can do to green your lifestyle in a fun, friendly and encouraging environment, then Soul-Full Eating for you!

Join us on this Delicious Path. We’d like to actively involve as many people as possible in the mission to eat with love!

We think this message is so important that we’re working on building a world-wide online community that will allow us to interact with one another in an engagingly fun, friendly and supportive atmosphere.
Even if you’re only “green curious” and not entirely green conscious, and have no idea where and how to begin… you’ll find that Soul-Full Eating takes the mystery—and misery—out of living a more sustainable lifestyle.

The 7 Most “Intelligent” Foods, by Maureen Whitehouse

I vividly remember standing at the front of my 4th grade classroom, being faced down by my teacher, Mrs. Chamberlin’s beady eyes as I first stammered, and then completely faltered, while attempting to recite the Gettysburg address. I just couldn’t remember what came after the pivotal line, “Now we are faced with a great civil war” Had I only known then, what I know today; that a powerful way to enhance our ability to learn is to pay attention to what goes into our mouths as well as what goes into our minds. Then, I might have told my mom to put a hold on the pop tart she’d given me for breakfast that morning, and asked her for a nice hot bowl of steaming oatmeal instead. (more…)
